Homework

Homework is designed so that first graders should be able to complete it independently for the most part (some assistance is ok). Please refrain from doing the work for your child. A maximum of 10-20 minutes per day spent on homework is appropriate for first graders. Make homework time FUN and not stressful or frustrating. Praise and reinforce good study habits at an early age!

MATH: Every day we will send home a homework page from our Envision math workbooks.  These pages will correlate directly with our daily math lessons. Please return them daily.  Also, please help your child as needed, making sure they are not given the answer by an adult. When given story problems, please have your child write out the math sentence (e.g. 1+2=3) and draw a picture to illustrate their thinking.

READING: It is crucial that you read to and read with your child on a daily basis. Students are highly encouraged to spend 10 to 20 minutes either reading on their own (or being read to, if they are an emergent reader). In class, they are often asked to reread the same text to help improve comprehension and fluency. Please let me know if you need book suggestions for your student.

SPELLING: Spelling tests are held every Friday (with the exception of some short weeks). Spelling lists will be provided on Monday in their homework packet.  The list is also available under the 'Spelling Tab' above. After each spelling test, please help your child review the words they missed on their spelling test at home. Click HERE for some fun spelling activities. *Word Wall Words are High Frequency sight words that students are expected to know by the end of 1st grade.
